St. Louis #1 Cemetery

This is a walking tour of the oldest existing cemetery in New Orleans, consecrated in 1789, and resting place of Creoles who resided in the nearby French Quarter, Marigny and Treme neighborhoods. Wander through the narrow alleys and learn about our French and Spanish culture, New Orleans' transformation into an American city, cemetery design and construction, wrought and cast iron ornamental enclosures, and traditional burial practices that are still practiced. Highlights include Marie Laveau’s tomb, the Italian Society tomb featured in the indie film Easy Rider, Homer Plessy’s tomb, and the future tomb of actor Nicholas Cage.

If you choose to take a custom tour your guide will accompany you either to or from your specified location in the French Quarter or Central Business District (CBD). In addition to the cemetery tour, while en route we will talk about architecture and the growth of New Orleans from 1718.

Lafayette #1 Cemetery Tour in the Garden District

Lafayette Cemetery #1 is the first city-owned/operated cemetery in New Orleans. First burial was in 1833. Lafayette Cemetery #1 is the home of yellow fever victims, politicians, firemen, prominent American businessmen who lived in the Garden District mansions, and Italian and German immigrants who populated the shotgun houses of the Irish Channel nearby.

You will gain insight into the development of the Garden District and Irish Channel neighborhoods, tomb design and construction, decorative ironwork, and burial practices that have continued today.  You will also admire the lovely funerary symbols that are in relief and unique inscriptions on the tablets that cover up the opening of the tombs. Lafayette Cemetery #1 is a popular site location for film and TV productions.
